Writing for writing sake

I’ve had a bit of a break from writing since I’m not really aiming to please anyone but myself. I have had a few ideas of what to write for my next blogs and forgot about the why. The question isn’t why? It’s why not? Writing is so easy for me yet I have only recently started this blog. I also thoroughly enjoy writing, even if it isn’t Shakespeare! My writing takes me places where I would not normally be, for example: a piece I’m thinking about writing soon is to do with my childhood which brings back past memories almost forgotten. These episodes of nostalgia fill me with joy, regret, hatred, and happiness, all at the same time!

My writing is for me, which is very selfish I know, but if I had an agenda or people to please it would become joyless and pointless. I want to focus on what matters to me, I want to be able to read these in 20 years and laugh, I want others to enjoy it (although it’s okay if you don’t). My goal is to inform my future self of my life and what I went though in more detail. I think this is because my memory is terrible and I’ll want a better record of my past other that from what others witness.

The joy of writing for writing sake is that there is no limits and nobody creatively critiquing your work over your shoulder or pressing for a deadline. It’s been 16 days since my last piece, and I have no shame in saying it was because I couldn’t be arsed! I do have more focus on what to write in the future, but that may vary as I get bored or change subjects down the line.

So it seems my writing goes hand in hand with my cycling as I’ve had a few weeks off from cycling because I haven’t been well and the weather hasn’t been great either. I was also feeling nervous about cycling to work as the winds were so high at the start of the year. I got back on the saddle this morning and zoomed into work warm and comfortable (despite the 4 degrees Celsius weather nipping at my ass cheeks). It was a lot easier without the winds and as soon as I got to work I felt invigorated. I always feel better when I exercise so it makes sense that I am suddenly motivated to write.

I will hopefully be zooming in a lot faster soon as I have applied for a cycle scheme voucher and plan to buy my first road bike. I have a lot to lean when it comes to cycling and have been lucky enough to meet other road cyclists at work who are more than happy to guide me on what kit and accessories I should acquire. I’m not sure how much faster a road bike will actually make me but I’ve always wanted one since riding on my dads Raleigh Road Bike from the 1990’s.
