New Year Resolution

I never normally make any real new year’s resolutions, and this year isn’t going to be any different. I’ve never taken the process very seriously as it seems presumptuous that a new year is going to somehow motivate you to complete the task you’ve set yourself. If you can’t motivate yourself on December 1st, why would the change of date make it any easier? I am self motivated enough and don’t require tradition to drive me forward.

I do normally join the gym on January 1st as it’s cheaper membership, but this year I have foregone the gym since I am cycling to work and have free access to the public pool across the road. If I am still craving the gym come February I will join up again. But the idea of spending £31 on a shitty little gym with very few weights seems like a waste of money; I’d rather take the year’s subscription and buy myself a load of gym kit for my garage. I could better use the £372 a year; in fact a quick check online and I’ve managed to find a full set of weights and bars for as little as £100. I may need to rearrange my garage a little to make it a useable space.

My aim to keep fit is to cycle to and from work each day and to swim at lunchtime, I’ll have to try it out to see if I can manage not wasting my lunchtime eating and watching Netflix! I also look forward to warmer and longer days; I’m keen to get a road bike and do some extra miles at the weekend if I’m not busy doing DIY around the house or taking the kids to the park/party/soft play etc.

I completed my first cycle of the year this morning and it was tough, really tough. I felt like I was barely moving unless I ducked below the high winds. My legs were also a bit slower than normal, which is expected after 3 weeks of laziness and chocolate binges. It took me 38 minutes to complete the 6 miles, and I can only hope it will be a lot easier on the way home! I still have to complete the Barrington Hill challenge I set myself, but may save it for the weekend instead since I will be carrying less gear!
