Changing Jobs

I recently got offered a new job, one that is closer to home, and has many other great benefits, the key one being that I could cycle to work.

To review my cycling history won’t take long: I bought my hybrid bike two years ago and rode it less than five times in that time. Before that I had a mountain bike that I rode sporadically one summer.

As soon as I accepted the job I started researching the route and what kit I would need. It seemed that every person I spoke to had advice to give for my journey; and boy did I need it!

By the time I actually got round to buying the clothing essentials I was missing, it was less than 12hours before I had to ride. Not a great start since it was hitting 2 degrees celcius on the first week, baptism of fire eat your heart out, I was about to freeze!

The thing that suprised me the most on that first day was that I wasn’t looking at passing cars with envy, but with gloating, sweaty pride at my own ability to use my underused cycling muscles to push myself the 6miles to work.

Admittingly it was very tough. I don’t know which hurt more; my legs, or my pride as grannies zoomed past me on road bikes!!

I made it to work and back in a total time of 1hr and 20mins, which is very slow for 12 miles with an eight hour break in the middle. Alas, I have to carry on. (Especially since I got rid of my car, which I really don’t miss)

Up next: End of week 1.
